About us
Kalithea Cats started as a feeding station for cats.
A group of around 20 volunteers of various nationalities help to feed the cats on a daily basis, participate in fundraising activities, find good homes for cats and kittens in need, catch cats and drive them to and from the vet or to the airport, spread the word about neutering and re-homing, provide education at schools, and much, much more.
Over the years the population of cats has grown and unfortunately we have to deal with diseases and many kittens who need more care. This has resulted in several pens where these animals are taken care of.
DESPITE THIS, KALITHEA CATS STILL IS NOT A SHELTER!
What we do
Our main aim is the humane reduction of the stray cat overpopulation
Each year, we try to get as many cats neutered/spayed, reducing the numbers of unwanted kittens born each season, and ensuring a healthier adult cat population.
We also improve the quality of life through feeding, by a routine anti-parasite treatment, and veterinary care for ill or injured animals, also each kitten will be vaccinated twice. In addition, we try to find loving, responsible homes for as many cats and kittens as possible.
We are just volunteers who dedicate our spare time to the stray cats, we have no office, no real shelter facilities, no animal ambulance or transport van, and we receive no state funding or assistance, we fully depend on donations.
Opening hours
As we are not a real shelter and do depend on our teams of volunteers you will not find us there every hour of the day.
Most of the times a team is there between 9 and 12 or sometimes till later.
But don’t let that stop you from visiting because the free roaming cats, of which there are plenty, are also fond of cuddles and attention.
If you decide to give them some treats or food, please never leftovers from restaurants, empty cans to be crushed as not to get their head stuck when they try to lick out the tasty remains and please keep our surroundings clean from waste (paper, bottles etc) as there is a big garbage bin nearby.
Meet our Volunteers
Our volunteers make it possible to take care of the cats every day. We are grateful for everyone who is part of our team and for the important role that they play in helping our furry friends. Our volunteers, at least 3 every day, are carrying out the following tasks: feeding the cats, looking closely for injuries or sickness which need to be treated, administer medication and/or other medical care, cleaning litter boxes, cleaning all indoor and outdoor areas, playing with and petting our cats.
Cats may carry contagious illnesses, so cleaning / disinfection and isolation is very important for cats, sometimes even for humans, not to spread through the population.
In addition, we interact with local and international visitors, we show what we do, tell about Kalithea Cats and let them cuddle with the animals to socialize them. We gratefully accept the donations that are given in the form of food and/or money. We also gratefully accept their help if they want to be part, even for one day, to work besides us.
If there is interest in adoption, the adoption procedure will be initiated.
